For a slightly less strenuous day you can start from Braemar station (40 km to Twizel). You meander your way down the eastern flanks of Lake Pukaki to the information centre where you can enjoy spectacular views up the lake to Aoraki Mount Cook before the final cycle 10km across the flats to Twizel.
If you want a gentler alternative (30 kms) then we can drop you on the Lake Tekapo Canal road, cycle on this quiet road past the Mt Cook salmon farm with magnificent views of Mt Cook and Lake Pukaki. Twizel - Lake Ohau Lodge (39kms)
Time for a leisurely breakfast and again with freshly made lunch loaded it’s time to cycle through the streets of Twizel to join the Lake Ruataniwha road heading to the Ohau sub station. From there on flat sealed roads you will cycle to the weir at the bottom of Lake Ohau, a total distance of approx.
21kms. After crossing the weir, riders join the 9kms of dedicated cycle way, this weaves along the lake edge and eventually joins the sealed road. Cycling from here via Lake Middleton and the Lake Ohau Village you arrive at Lake Ohau Lodge. Enjoy a refreshing drink and perhaps a platter of nibbles with fantastic lake views before our Alps 2 Ocean transfer take you back to your accommodation.
With only 39kms to cycle this day, it may be an opportunity for you to cycle down and join a guided tour to the endangered Black Stilt Colony Recovery Centre on the outskirts of Twizel.
Lake Ohau Lodge - Quail burn - Omarama or Twizel (42kms)
With lunch and refreshments packed you start from Lake Ohau Lodge and join the cycle trail heading east back along the face of the range that rises to the ski field. The trail weaves across farm and conservation land for 18kms, crossing Freehold Creek with its bush track and then onwards to eventually arrive at the Quail burn stream complex. Here an historic shearing shed has been restored and this provides a picture of early shearing methods and sheep handling.
The next section of the valley road is unsealed for the first 13kms, before providing a beautiful 7km sealed down valley ride past Clay Cliffs on the right and out to the Highway. On a dedicated trail around the Ahuriri river, cyclists cross the bridge and follow the road 4kms into Omarama.
Cyclists can then enjoy a soak in the Omarama Hot tubs and in the late afternoon be taken back to Twizel for the last night of your adventure.
